Bear attack - Hunter Valley area
http://www.calgarysun.com/2015/08/30/tw ... bear-spray
I never ever see bears when on the bike, not even the hind end running away, just scat.
Thoughts...

I heard on the radio that the area will be closed for the long weekend. I wonder if that means the entire ghost pluz or just the area where the attack happened.

There is also sign of bear at the northerly most portion of the race loop during the early spring months with a kill sight on the ridge, and a old bear stand in the lower valley. I was doing some course work in the area and on my way back out there was some fresh bear scat where I walked in. Its bear country so always camp and travel accordingly.

Re: Bear attack - Hunter Valley area
I have come across plenty of bears (and scat) on the bike. Bears and spiders are the worst part of leading a ride
I have only ever had one bear stop and turn around, all the others take off. The one that turned around left into the bush immediately. When we are course cutting or scouting trails I do try to make plenty of noise and try to stay aware while walking through the forest.
The bear populations have been growing at a huge rate the last few years. This spring the number of bears with multiple offspring was huge again. The black bear issues in Northern Alberta at our work sites are getting worse too.

I worked with a bear last week, and some cougars. No spiders though.

Sounds REALLY scary. Watch out for them, and don't drop the checklist.thirtyseven wrote:I worked with a bear last week, and some cougars. No spiders though.

The ridge trail from Mockingbird to Hunter Valley is or was called "Bear Sh*t in the woods" for a good reason Have seen lots of (mostly grizz) in that area over the years. Beautiful animals

I also saw a black bear on the north part of the race loop. He was a fast runner. Don't worry the Pros will clear the trail out for us mortals.
