South Saskatchewan Regional Plan Phase Two Consultation
FROM:
Deputy Minister Dana Woodworth
SUBJECT:
South Saskatchewan Regional Plan Phase Two Consultation
I am pleased to inform you that the Government of Alberta today announced the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan phase two consultation. Beginning on November 6, we will be visiting 20 communities to gather feedback on the Regional Advisory Council's advice to government for the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. You can also provide your input through a workbook that will again be posted to www.landuse.alberta.ca
Completing regional plans under the Land-use Framework is a priority of this government under Premier Redford's leadership and a critical component of the province's plan to better coordinate and integrate natural resource management. Last month we began implementation of the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan, the first plan approved under the framework, and two days ago, the government introduced legislation to create a single provincial regulator for upstream energy resource activities.
Along with the recently announced arm’s-length environmental monitoring agency, the elements of our integrated resource management system will help us realize the environmental, economic and social benefits Albertans expect from development activity in our resource-rich province.
Regional plans are developed in consultation with Albertans and we will take the advice from the Regional Advisory Council and the feedback of Albertans and develop a draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. Then we will again ask Albertans for their feedback on the draft plan.
A great deal of hard work goes into the organization and execution of a consultation of this size and scope and I want to thank ESRD staff members for their dedication to advancing one of the key priorities of our ministry and government.
I encourage you to share this information with your colleagues, family and friends.

Re: South Saskatchewan Regional Plan Phase Two Consultation
maybe we should all go to the event than have a bench racing session at a local pub.
Any takers?

Great idea Dobi. I won't be in town that week, but otherwise would go for sure.Dobi wrote:maybe we should all go to the event than have a bench racing session at a local pub.

I will be filling out the workbook though.

I also note a session in Cochrane, and Okotoks, and Strathmore... what is the best collective strategy to maximize our voice?
I'll definitely go to Cochrane and Calgary. To hear and be heard, and bench race thereafter.

Re: South Saskatchewan Regional Plan Phase Two Consultation
What happens at one of these consultations sessions? Never been to one and I see it runs 4 pm to 8 pm. All it says people "provide input", what are the nuts and bolts of that?
Re: South Saskatchewan Regional Plan Phase Two Consultation
The ones I've been to are usually pretty informal. They mostly have information and hand outs for people. There's gov people there to ask questions to and capture any concerns you have.
Basically we need to tell them face-to-face that there isn't nearly enough designated single track in Southern Alberta (or all of Alberta for that matter). Mclean is the best example of a working Trial Network but it's much to small to support the population around Calgary. The Ghost is 7 times larger then Mclean but only has 1 single track trail (how does that make sense). The process to add more trail is nearly impossible in the Ghost. How is the SSRP going to address this? Without a meaningful SingleTrack trail network, riders are often left with no choice but riding illegally on historical trails. It also needs to be said that adding more designated Quad trails does little to address the issue for dirtbikers.
If you haven't been to one I would encourage you and everyone else to go. If we're not willing to make the time to go to these then the government is going to assume we don't care that much and close even more area's to riding. If we're willing to drive an hour or more to go riding then make the same effort to go to these sessions and make a difference.

Also worth mentioning.....
In the Ghost area we only have 1 single track trail and it is open in the winter.
Mclean has several trails but is closed to motorcycles in the winter.
Do they expect all winter riders to ride one trail in the Ghost??
I'll be attending.

Whether you are planning to attend the SSRP meetings or not, fill out the online questionnaire.
Fill it out more than once if you can. I can almost guarantee those who want limit motorized recreation are doing the same…
https://landuse.alberta.ca/Newsroom/Pag ... tions.aspx
click the link to "online workbook". Takes ~20 minutes to fill out, be sure to add some commentary about ORM/OHV access in the relevant comment boxes.
