Online input on land-use advice extended until property rights concerns heard

Timeline for approval of oil sands region land-use plan also extended

Edmonton... Albertans have until April 30, 2012, to fill out an online workbook on advice from the South Saskatchewan Regional Advisory Council for a land-use plan for southern Alberta. Originally, the deadline was December 19.

Acting on its terms of reference, the council had recommended how a regional plan could address water supply, economic development and conservation needs in southern Alberta. Public and stakeholder consultation sessions on this advice will start in late February.

The extended workbook deadline recognizes that the government’s task force on property rights is meeting with stakeholders this month and will conduct open houses in January to listen to Albertan’s property rights concerns.

The property rights task force is chaired by Diana McQueen, Minister of Environment and Water. Evan Berger, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, is vice-chair. Other members are: Ministers Frank Oberle (Sustainable Resource Development); Verlyn Olson, Q.C. (Justice and Attorney General); Jeff Johnson (Infrastructure); Cal Dallas (Intergovernmental, International and Aboriginal Relations); and MLAs Raymond Prins (Lacombe-Ponoka) and Arno Doerksen (Strathmore Brooks).

The timeline for approval of a draft regional plan for the Lower Athabasca region of northeast Alberta, including the oil sands, is extended pending the outcome of the property rights review.

What a terrible workbook. Very vague questions and when you click on the link to explain it, it has like less than a full sentence.

I couldn't tell if answering one way or the other would lead to more trails in the area. for example

Identify and develop new areas capable of becoming iconic tourism destinations. Areas that should be considered include the Castle, Crowsnest Pass, Kananaskis and the portion of the Canadian Badlands in the region.

Develop and manage the Castle and Crowsnest Pass as iconic nature-based tourism destinations. Effectively manage the Castle without necessarily designating it as a provincial park.

If I agree does that mean lot's of tourism infrastructure for golf and hiking but no OHV access or disagree and it will become a park or stay as a natural area?

Unmanaged recreation activities that do not demonstrate stewardship and respect for the natural environment, other values and land uses should not be permitted on public lands.

• Motorized recreation, including rallies and races, should not be permitted on public lands unless authorized on designated trails, routes and areas.

My answer: Many motorized activities demonstrate stewardship. http://rockymountaindirtriders.com does just that.

The community that puts on motorcycle races are very good stewards of the land and are generally the ones that volunteer to install infrastructure to protect the land.
