A call for action - SPC October 31, 2005

Post by thumper-darryl »

The AOHVA representatives will be making a presentation to the Alberta Government "Standing Policy Committee"(SPC) on October 31, 2005.

In February 2005 the AOHVA in co-operation with the Federation of Alberta Naturalists (FAN) hosted a recreational trails workshop in Edmonton. 14 different provincial stakeholder groups were in attendance including the AOHVA, FAN, hunting organisations, guiding organisations, municipalities, etc. This workshop focused on the importance of recreational trails, and addressed the benefits and the problems associated with recreational trail use on public lands. Now we are taking that message directly to the decision makers. This SPC is a group of MLAs that are responsible for looking at recommendations for legislation before it goes for a vote to all the MLAs. Most MLAs do not have any idea about the value of recreational trails other than what they hear on the TV, which is usually slanted and incorrect. An important part of this presentation is who is there listening. Any intertested MLA can take in the presentation that the AOHVA is doing. Any MLA that attends the October 31, 2005 AOHVA presentation to the SPC will be more informed about the importance of recreational trail usage. So when it comes time to vote on land use legislation (like GAMP) the informed MLA's will be able to make a more informed decision and help all MLA's understand the importance during discussion time. I urge everyone to contact their MLA and ask that they attend the SPC presentation on October 31, 2005. This is an important piece of the puzzel to retain our riding areas. Darryl Copithorne

Please refer to our Land Advocacy page under Letter Writing Information. There are 2 links there that will help you find your MLA. :bonk:

More information on this will be posted on the main web page in a day or two.
