Forestry Closure-effective Aug 1/07 (fire hazard)

Post by MtnBlue »

from livingstone south to almost the border was closed today due to extreme fire hazard. Anyone with camping plans at Racehorse/Livingstone/Dutch Creek/Porkies,etc will have to go elsewhere

Has anyone ever heard of a ban on camping ever before in an area that has no fires in Alberta?

What happened to the standard fire ban only?

Minister Morton makes me scratch my head, i tell ya.

Unreal.

Yes, this has happened before. In 2004 they closed all of Castle, Livingstone, Indian Graves, and I do believe Mclean Creek was also closed. This closure was for an extended period of time, not just the long weekend.

The Government cannot risk losing more forest due to fire. The government looses way too much money in lost royalties due to fires wiping out entire Forest Management Areas and also gets pressure from the FMA holders to impose these access bans.

Not defending Morton, just bringing forward a different view of the situation.

I just read the notice on the Alberta web site. Even the roads like the forestry trunk road are closed. More info at the Alberta news web site.

Despite all of the dry weather and closures,
The Second Gear Club's Fallen Timber Race (August 4/5) is STILL A GO.

The Second gear Club has been granted access to specific trails.
These trails are not open to the public outside of race weekends.

Funny how the government don't want to loose trees to fire but they let companies log the sludge out of the forests!!!!!!!

I don't think it's funny. IMO, they don't care about loosing trees as much as they care about loosing revenue from the logging companies that pay to harvest the trees.

I think it was a good call to shut the areas down, its freaking dry out there.

As far as the money/logging thing goes...someone must have the numbers of what the govt gets from new OHV sales and registration fees? Not to mention the money from new trailers/trucks ect ect. Yeah there is a significant amount of money the govt gets from the harvesting of our forests, but they also get a fair chunk of dough both directly and indirectly from our sport.

I didn't mean it so much as "funny" but more typical if you know what I mean!

Excellent work for the race organisers from SGC to put the 2 races on in the midst of GAMP and the fire ban closures! This gives everyone race options weather it is CMRC or CMA. Lots of rain lately and some tonight maybe, it seems like the forrests are either "banned" or all the way at the other end of the spectrum and they read "low" fire hazard. i guess better off banned if there is a chance. mclean is still open and quite busy on the weekend.
