Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan

Post by RJHenry »

All:

Alberta Environment and Parks is interested in getting your input on the Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan and request that you complete the following questionnaire.

Please click on the link below:
https://extranet.gov.ab.ca/opinio6/s?s=27506

To inform yourself prior to answering the questionnaire, please either read the Grizzly Bear Recovery Planning document or the Alberta Grizzly Bear – Recovery Plan (Draft). Both are found on the welcome page accessed via the link.

Of particular interest is the section 7.2.2 regarding the effects of motorized access.
To the credit of the authors, the distinction of linear disturbance threshold as OPEN ROAD is clearly stated and identifies vehicle-bear impacts as the significant downside of motorized access. The report does identify the need to understand the impacts of OHV use and, IF NECESSARY, develop OHV trail density thresholds similar to the open road density recommendation.

This is, in my opinion, a very fair and balanced statement. I encourage you to complete the survey and add your comments at the end - particularly regarding the social and ecomonic impacts on motorized recreation - but please recognize that the Plan calls for the scientific understanding of the impacts of our trails and our presence, mitigating the effect of motorized access, but does not call for a ban or even a curtailment.

Opponents of OHV use may have unreasonably extended their agenda from this research, but these documents seem pretty fair.
