Buying new skis? Test 2012 Recommendations from Ski Canada

Postby singletrack » Thu Nov 17, 2011 7:59 am

I purchased a Ski Canada magazine last night only to find all the recommendations online anyway... what's the point of buying a magazine again ?

MtnBlue, are skis in the "All Mountain" category the area to look in?

Yeah, I was a little confused too. Would any of these pass as Alpine Touring skis?

I haven't bought skis in years and now I'm out of touch..

You can use any pair of skis as AT skis, its just the weight thats an issue, ie for yoying you'll be fine with any but for long tours the lighter the better. If you want the latest, greatest, lightest, have a look at the Movement skis. Super light and good stiffness for what they are. Slap on some Dynafit bindings on it, and you'll have the cool-kid lightest setup on the block.

What Mark said on the touring gear. I just do short stuff and use and old pair of Rossi B3's (shorter than what I would use at the hill) and fritschi freeride bindings with Garmont boots. It's not super light, but works for the few time a year that I get out ( zero last year  ). As far as Alpine skis go, starting in the all mountain category is probably best DB. Skis have changed quite a bit (again) in the last couple of years. Rockered or reverse camber skis are pretty popular. I use to ski on longer stiffer skis, but don't anymore. Currently my choice is the Rossi S7 and super 7. It's a weird looking ski, but I love the way it works. I don't spend anytime on groomed runs( except on the way down to the truck). I'm usually looking for softer snow, steep terain, without a lot of big bumps. These skis still work well on groomed but not what they are made for. On a powder day...they are ridiculous fun
