New Rims
New Rims
I need to replace my front rim on my KX250. Is this a do it your self job or should I pay the $65 Bow Cycle wants and have it done right the first time? Since I am replacing the front rim I thought about doing the back as well, I was thinking about going to a more off-road friendly 18", does anybody have any info about how it will affect my gearing?
It does sound like a fair price. If you are riding off road for the most part then the 18 inch rear is a great idea! You can use a tire with a lot more sidewall and that helps with absorbing rocks and roots, etc. Also a lot better flat protection
IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MANY HOURS YOU PUT IN. IT MATTERS WHAT YOU PUT IN THE HOURS!!!

Will not affect your gearing at all Overall diameter of 18 & 19 tires are the same just the 19 has lower profile, less sidewall. That is why 19s are more prone to flats.

Thanks for the info. I didnt know that about 18"& 19" tires but it makes sense. Now my question is this - how will the higher sidewall of the 18" tire affect handeling on the MX track? I like to do a couple of Oldtimer MX events every year and is the back end going to feel all loose? Or should a mediocre "C" class mx'er even worry about it?
If anyone is looking for new rims, Pro-Wheel in Washington state sold me a front hoop for $66 us. That beats an Excel bought localy for $179 cd. And I have been quoted a low of $65 by Bow to a high of $200 by Blackfoot to lace it to my hub. I think I am going to try lacing it my self - how hard could it be?

depends on how much your time is worth, will probably take the better part of a day before you get it right, centering rim to hub is the hardest part.. $65.00 man that is cheap.
