KTM Springs

Post by dirtyboy »

Anyone know where I can buy some fork springs in Calgary for the KTM? I need the 44 rate and they are 504mm long.

Dirtyboy,
I don't know who has them but I'm interested too. Mostly about the price.
I'll have to keep an eye on this thread.
Steve.

You can get OE White Power springs, general parts for that matter, from Walt Healy as they are Calgary's dealer for Husaberg motorcycles and will have access to those parts.

I found some 44 springs that came in a 450XC. They were replaced for heavier springs. The garage deals are always the best. :D

fry, thanks for the info about Walt Healy on the 'bergs. Is there an online parts catalogue for the Husaberg? I use those parts books to figure out what I need to order.

Canadian, the price should be between $100 - $140. KTM parts price in US for the springs is $164USD so about $200CDN + shipping + duty + GST. I bet the Husaberg springs will be less than that from Walt Healy. I saw in Parts Canada that they sell RaceTech springs and the retail is $140. Almost any big shop can order from Parts Canada for you. I couldn't sleep last night so I did a bit Internet research. :D

Hey Dave - have you gone to a firmer or softer spring? What is the rating on the stock spring?

Dave

You can go to www.hsuaberg.se for downloadable manual, shop, owners and parts.

Careful with some aftermarket companies springs, as their QC is not the best and you may install the same spring that you just removed. Dave at A&E has experienced this. Not to say that some companies don't make good spings, just be carefull which ones you get.

fryguy,

Thanks for the tip. I know that springs are not always what you expect. I've got a line on some stock springs from a 450XC that are just a bit heavier (in theory) than mine.

I measured my springs and they seem to be pretty close to their rated value. 40

You can always tell a propeller head when they want to read the parts manual. :D

How did you measure the spring rate Dave? What'd ya rig up? - or do you have a tool for that?

I found a low tech way to roughly measure the springs. It doesn't even compare to a spring tester but it will tell you which springs are lighter if you have 2 sets. I put a barbell bar vertical in my vise and put a spring on it and stacked 4 - 10 lb barbell weights on top. Spring length measurements were taken before and after stacking the weights on top to determine how far the spring depresses under the weight.

40 lbs = apprx 18.14 kg

I have 3 sets of springs:

from new bike, 06 250xcw, manual says they are .40:
with 40lb weight stack, depresses 45mm
18.14kg/45mm = .403 kg/mm ( s/b .40)

supposedly .44 springs
with 40lb weight stack depresses 40mm
18.14kg/40mm = .4535 kg/mm ( s/b .44)

supposedly .40 springs
with 40lb weight stack, depresses 43mm
18.14kg/43mm = .422 kg/mm ( s/b .40) >> looks more like .42 springs to me

As you can see it is the difference of 2-3mm for each spring size so you have to measure really carefully and the room for error is pretty large. For me it's close enough to at least determine what spring is which and if the springs are close to being the right weight. :D
