KTM 300 Jetting

Post by crazy2wheeler »

Anyone running a 300 with the stock exhaust? What primary/main/needle & clip position are you using for waiparous area (that'd be in the 4000-5000ft range?)? No current mods to my engine/carb/exhaust, 2005 300exc. Thanks!

Hey, i just got schooled in this subject

i bought a 168 main jet (BF has them, WH is getting some in any day)
42 pilot jet (WH has them, BF does not)
NOZ(i) needle (i had one already)

All mine goes in tommorrow.

I believe Tom's bike is a 2001 and your bike is a 2005. The motors and carbs are different. KTM has corrected all of their jetting issues with the 04/05's. Riding at 4000 - 7000 ft go down 10% on your main jet and raise your clip up one on your needle. That should do it for this elevation!

Hey Crazy, did you get your machine running better? if so was it jetting? did you jet as per the manual?

Would like to know, friend of mine just got an 05 300 and it obviously needs some fine-tuning. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

300 jetting

Post by bikesinmud »

I have went up on the pilot to a 38, amsoil dominator at 60:1 with premium pump gas, stock needle position and a 158 main jet. Bike flat out hauls big time!! However, this is with a FMF pipe and silencer from the hard parts catalogue. I did not use the stock stuff, not sure if this is the reason.

These carb setting seem to work well in the baseline, nordegg and waiparous areas, not sure of the elevations. Looking forward to testing at limestone 6-7000ft. Probably will have to rejet and move the needle or not, if my dial a jet arrives soon.

Thanks again.....last question...did you stay with the stock gearing? 14-52? or drop to a 13 front?

See you out at McLean.

I stayed with the stock gearing and the red spring. I feel that their is no point to changing gearing yet, since sprockets are in great shape and the bike works flawlessly. I have a habit of being on the clutch a lot so the gearing is not an issue just yet. The only complaint is that a six speed would be the ticket because I find that their is too much of a gap between 2nd and 3rd. I've geared down on other bikes and end up shifting a lot more then I feel a large gap between 3rd and 4th.

Yeah, a 6th gear would be a nice addition. Keihin carbs are so nice!!! not finicky, just plug along no matter 3000-8500ft. Mix the gas at 80:1 and giver....unless you are riding sand or endless mud.
The fmf gnarly and turbine core spark arrestor is a great combo-does change the jetting a little richer.
one down on main jet, drop the needle all the way, play with the air screw (2 turns out) and switch from a brg 7 plug to a brg 8eg. My brother has the same bike and never changed the jetting and it runs the same!!>???
