Fan Kit

So I boiled my new bike over pretty good this weekend. 2018 ktm 300xc. I am thinking I need a radiator fan. Is the trail tech the one to go with? Apparently you have to go fast to get some air through the rads. Any thoughts will help. Thanks.

Your probably lean. I ride very technical stuff and rarely ever boil. What is your jetting?

I have the JD jetting kit in. I can’t remember which ones I put in, but nothing too aggressive

Make sure your coolant is topped up all the way - it boils over faster if you're a little low. A higher pressure rad cap can help too and is a lot cheaper than a fan kit.

I know you use a rekluse. They tend to get the bike hotter due to the clutch slipping. The way rekluse recommends then be set up isn’t good for our riding. Check the set up guide set it for low engagement rpm and hard engagement, this should help with overheating as the clutch will slip less.

Disagree. Even with my "superior" clutch skills I overheat bikes more without a Rekluse. To avoid stalling without a Rekluse I tend to slip the clutch more and maintain higher RPM's...making more heat. Granted I ride bigger 4-strokes which don't continue to run down to a couple hundred RPM like a well jetted 2-stroke (wonder if the TPI's keep running at as equally low RPM?).

I do agree that they are best with low and hard engagement.

Check your pilot size, if it's less than a 30 that may be your reason. Super easy to check, tilt the carb and pull the float bowl drain for access.

My point wasn’t rekluse vs no rekluse. Just that rekluse reccomended settings aren’t very good and may be the cause of his overheating. I don’t use a rekluse but have in the past and if they aren’t set up right the bike will overheat often.

Jetting and clutch slippage are significant contributing factors, deal with those first. Rad caps help prevent boiling but your bike is not running cooler. Run cheap Preston premix, route the vent under the bike and let it boil. I have done bushwhacking rides with serious boiling and was concerned my coolant was gone, got home topped up and I lost less than 25%. Besides if you bike is boiling, you are probably also gassed and need to cool down yourself. ThAt said I run a injected 4t with stock cooling and lots of clutch abuse. For sure, the fan kit works as advertised.

Just my two cents: The comments above are correct. A rad cap is a band-aid whereas the fan is the cure. However, I'd consider how often the boiling occurs and whether it could be helped with jetting before spending the cash for a fan kit.

If you boil on every trail ride, then yeah, you probably need a fan. If you just boil on the rare occasion when the weather is hot, the trail is tight or after a super technical hill climb...
