-who has some jetting tips, follow the book? JD jetting kit? new carb?
-stock gearing OK? or will it need to be geared down?
-is a fan required?

Thanks

First of all mine is a 250, so I am not sure if the info transfers, but here's what I found....

I was worried about the jetting issues from all the negative talk about the jetting issues on forums. I did the recommended JD Jet kit settings on mine and have been impressed how good it works.

Turns out the JD kit, plus springs for weight and sag settings are the only changes I did to mine and I Love it!

I don’t think a fan is needed on a 2 stroke. Gearing is personal preference, try it stock for a while before changing it.

The 300's run hotter than 250's, a fan may be required depending on the type of riding you do, but I ride pretty slow/gnarly/hillclimby stuff and haven't had a major issue yet. Chances are if you are boiling you are running too lean.

I'll post back my jetting settings when I get home. A lot of guys are running a 5.75 slide instead of the stock 4.0, and there's also a little trick to file down the reed side of the slide. I haven't tried this yet but intend to.

Don't touch the gearing, it's fine.

I have a '17 300, and have pretty much thrown the book at mine. Lectron and an RK head for me. I was super happy with the Lectron, and then putting the RK head on this spring has cleaned up the bottom end really nicely so its got great response, and now is a low end torque machine.

I have a fan on mine, and it will come on at 91C, which my bike gets to after long climbs, or if its particularly muddy and I'm working my way through something. I find it helps quite a bit. I also have my bike plated for street use, so I thought a fan would be good when stopped at traffic lights.

Red power valve spring for sure, otherwise it seems like the mid range is ineffective. I use a map switch to dial back the power when I need. I am a 6'4" 240 lb rider however, and you may find you need a lower power level than me to be happy.

Fro what its worth, my wifes '17 150XCW ran horribly with the same 38mm Mikuni, and when I switched it out to a Keihin it has become much much cleaner and pleasant. After speaking with other members here regarding their 300's, they found some relief when using the 5.75 slide in their Mikuni's, but also found another great step forward slapping the Keihin on that as well. If it were my money, I would go that route if you couldn't get your Mikuni jetting dialed in. And an RK hed. They really seem to do wonders for low end response and feel.

I've got an 18 300XC and love it. I don't run a fan and have never done so on a 2 stroke. Just route the breather to the back of the bike so it doesn't give you a facial

I go back and forth on gearing. I ran a 50 rear in kamloops and noticed that first was really tall compared to the 52 I normally run in winter and endurocross. The nice thing is you can go back and forth by switching the direction of the axle blocks for 2 teeth.

I gave up on Mikuni and JD and bought a keihin from a 2016 300XC model. That in my mind made a huge difference. I haven't touched the carb since. I winter rode it here at -10 and went to 400M elevation and +20 in BC and never even bothered fiddling with an airscrew. We had WFO sections that went deep and I never so much as heard a ping

Are you running a Jd kit in the keihin? Or do you have some tips for jetting you could share for a 36pwk on a new 300??

I have run JD kits in the past with good luck, especially when running an SX head

162 main and a 38 pilot. L needle in the 2nd from top position (I can never remember how to label them)
I have gone as low as 158. but it hurts the top end run out at lower elevation and heavy loads.

Great stuff. Thanks

Another topic, what is everyone using for skid plates? I have been using KTM plastic units for the last 8 years and like them. I see Emperor Racing has a mammoth of a unit (with pipe guard), seems a little overkill, maybe I'm wrong, anyone using one of these units.

http://www.sxslideplate.com/

hands down the best skidplate I have ever run. Most of the endurocross guys run them as well as Graham Jarvis. He builds them in the PNW and does ship to Canada.

Here's my SXS like home built:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13165

Here's what I think I'm running from a different post:

42-75 Clip 1 (top clip)
27.5 pilot
430 main
Stock slide

I may have went richer on the pilot since then but that should be a good starting point.

I'll be trying my 5.75 slide soon, which typically you need a larger pilot with.

Excellent thanks. Just going to put the Keihin on this week and see how it compares.

I would be running a 38mm Keihin if it were me. Have the 38mm on the 150 and I would say it is appropriately sized. I would worry about killing top end on the >17' 300 with a 36mm.

Top end didn't suffer here. That is me in the orange out front.... Keep in mind that the 300's came with 36's for years. If I was a desert rat near sea level I would go with a 38. For the trees we ride, crisp bottom is better.

FYI put a old ktm hard parts fan kit on the new 300. The bracket was different but ktm happens to sell just the brack from there exc’s for cheap! Cost $20 with the bracket and four screw.

Oh and put the pwk36 on and it’s just what I was looking for. :dblthumb:
