I made a skid plate

Postby Rider Eh! » Thu Oct 05, 2017 6:12 am

Thought I'd share this with everyone. I don't think this belongs in the penny tech article since it was about $50 in material.

I used UHMW, though I suppose you may be able to use nylon. It's the same stuff Obie link guards are made form. I'm not sure if TM Designs uses nylon or UHMW, but it's quite similar.

Nice work. Where'd you get the material?

Norwesco, was about $35 for a 2x3' sheet which was good enough for 2. I used 3/16" as that was what my OEM skidplate and Obie guards were. You could maybe go 1/4" but it would be harder to bend. One thing I learned is heat up from the inside of your bend with only quick passes on the outside, or the outside will separate and crack. I used a bit of HDPE to plastic weld some minor cracks.

For tools, I used CAD (Cardboard Aided Design). I used a rivet nut gun on the aluminum channel/plate as I didn't want to have to mess around getting the nuts on the under side. That was the one tool I had to purchase plus some nice hardware.
