Ever ride a serious bike with out a shifter

Post by turbo2point3 »

Been looking high and low for one, had to have a water cooled 430.
The hare scramble cheater bike of the good old days.
I found this in the states, maybe 5 88s made.
Super clean, well set up and maintained low miles.
3 gears

Damn that is cool Turbo, I remember those back in the day, killer find.
There was some reliability or maintenance issue with those Auto's, but can't recall what it was.
I think it was Terry Cunningham that won on that bike - alot.

He sure did and the issues were the springs broke.

New springs are being remade. They have a better plate to upgrade with now that covers them and a tab to lock the primary drive nut.It keeps springs in place so they cant jam up a gear if it breaks.

Easy to pull apart, no case splitting for gears, clutches and drum service. Use Ohlins or Maxima shock oil in the trans.

Many tricks to apply for the auto these days.

Any 1 who owns 1 in the vintage Husky world, pretty much said they will never sell the their favorite bike to ride. haha

Ah, yes the springs. Great news that they can be made better than when new. I would never ever sell that bike if I had one, enjoy.

Wow. Neat machine. I had to do some googling to wrap my head around how it would work. This was an interesting read: http://www.pulpmx.com/stories/look-back ... a-390-auto

Sounds like it had some advantages... as well as some quirks!

Some of the really tricked out AEs (automatic enduro) have many serious add ons.
They add a sprocket shaft driven oil pump that goes to a oil filter then up to a oil cooler and back to the trans. From drain plug to oil fill cap.
Guys have added a rear brake lever where the clutch lever is on a normal bike.
Thats great for having the right foot off the peg and still using the rear brake.
Its an easy bike to put modern forks on, 1980 to 2004 use the same triple clamp bearings.
Rear disc is easy enough too with early Husaberg or 4 stroke Husky parts from the early 90s.

I cant wait to play on some hills with freewheel bearings ( a 1 way bearing).
When ever you let off the gas its free wheel mode, coasting with zero engine breaking.
So if you lift and come to a stop on a hill, no brakes needed.
The bike will not roll back, only if you move the trans lever to neutral.

Nothing beats a 500 AE out of the gate and 430 is a monster too.

I think the only thing that can compare is 1 of those freerides, huge torque and never stalls.
Never have to worry about being the right gear LOL

Few more neat parts it has, takes a 1/2 to pull the guts out for service.

What are your plans for it? I.e. are you restoring it and keeping it stock or planning to modernize and upgrade?

Do some internal mods and have it totally safe and reliable. Some guys have 25k on their autos ;) (86 & 87)
Got friends all over the globe to lean on for support and parts.
No Restoration, its near mint where it matters to me.
Occasional rider, i like to switch bikes to ride a lot. I only restored 2 of my bikes.
All of them are rebuilt, ready for a rip at any time.
Kills the value to some purist's. I get a hard time when i change a seat cover when they were faded. lol
Some bikes i mod, to make it rock. But they are not as rare, so no big deal.
I swap forks to disc on a few, when its a fun rider but had a drum front brake. (83 and 84)
Put upside down forks on my 86 430 and 87 510, as i ride them lots.

This is a rare bike.
Not sold in the US in 89 and only 5 came to Canada.
1989b 510 TE, was a basket case for $350
From Italy and 80% Swedish parts still.

Where is that place, never heard of that 1?
Have 2 friends with a crated 87. 1 sold for $5500 US a few months ago.

1987 was a bad year for small Husky dealers. They never bought many bikes and the future was dim.
Dealers had to start selling Ducati bikes to buy more Husqvarnas is what i heard.
Most of the 430 AEs were left in the crate and unsold as American Husky little dealers were dropping the brand.

I wanted an 88 for the way better front disc set up and i was lucky to get 1 of the last to be assembled.

They knew how to build a fabulous bike and truly a hand built machine.
It came with a nice tag with the signature on the bars from the lad who assembled your bike.
I chat with 2 of them from the old factory on facebook. 1 owns a 88 AE like me in Sweden.
