Ktm wheel bearing

Post by Gordonfroese »

I recently did my rear wheel bearing on a 13 300 xc. When I punched the bearings out I didn't realize there was a little plastic wheel bearing spacer that's in there. I installed the new bearings without that little plastic piece and now the spacer seems to float around inside the hub. Once it's all installed I have no wheel slap. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I have never seen a plastic spacer like you describe in a KTM wheel set. Previous owner do somthing silly? If the metal hub spacer is slapping around the bearings wont last long.

Nope. I bought the bike new and it's the first time for the bearings. The little plastic piece is a little fishy to me. Might stop by Blackfoot and see if they can't find anything on their diagrams.

There's an iPhone app called Ktm assistant that has all the diagrams and part numbers.

The part is #16 - Distance Ring. It gets mangled when you pound out the bearing from the other side. I had the same problem on my '13 Berg. It does not go between the bearings and the center spacer, but it does go between the bearing and the hub if I remember correctly. I think it would be ok to run without it, but just don't try to drive the bearing in too hard as it will bottom out against the spacer on the inner race before the outer race bottoms out, if that makes sense.

Well that's a crazy design. Guessing the idea of the plastic spacer is to act like a disposable crush washer to account for manufacture tolerances in the hub and Part#3.

Ya only the KTM/HUsky OEM full repair kits come with the plastic spacer. Make sure you get the right one as some models don't require.

On a side note you should technically buy the whole kit when replacing bearing which come with spacers as once the spacers become "grooved" the seal no longer keeps the mud/water out and therefore results in the new bearing pre-maturely wearing out. I typically recommend at minimum buy the kit every second change.

In addition, it's a good idea to periodically pull your spacers, make sure they're clean and put some grease around the out lip/race. I also try to put some grease between the seal and the bearing.

did something happen to you in Texas where you started preventative maintenance? The closest I've seen of that is a complete teardown of a 500 in a garage in Moab after a few days of riding....

Mr Dobi, it appears you misread my earlier post. I suggest people do periodic maintenance, not preventative maintenance. If you are having difficulty understanding the difference between periodic maintenance and repairs, please let me know and I'll explain further.
