Guys,
Been trouble shooting my speedo and hour meter on my 07 KTM 250 xcfw for the past few days. Hasn't worked all season I searched this forum for ideas and have found that the rotor that's on my bike now is not the stock rotor and has no hole to mount the magnet.
Question
Has anyone drilled a hole in a rotor to mount the stock magnet? Will that jeopardize the rotor integrity?
Is there an alternate option to the stock magnet?
For curiousity, how does the magnet affect the hour meter? Shouldn't the hour meter run off the coil?
Your input will be appreciated.

Front Brake Rotor Speedo and Hour Magnet
Re: Front Brake Rotor Speedo and Hour Magnet
The magnet should not effect the hour meter at all.
Re: Front Brake Rotor Speedo and Hour Magnet
That's what I thought, but on a previous post if you search magnet Someone says it does? I may have miss read.
It's quite aggravating as I have read my owners manual cover to cover with no mention of the hour meter at all.
Could the battery be to weak to record data? The clock and timer still work though. Just no speed or hour readings

Re: Front Brake Rotor Speedo and Hour Magnet
ktms only record hours when the front wheel is rolling so if you have no magnet it won't record anything. It's not a true engine hour meter. I don't know about drilling a hole in the rotor, I do know that the magnet is cheap and cycle works had it in stock when I needed one.

I would just buy a rotor that has the hole in it already. It has to be in a specific location. You don't have to buy an oem rotor, any aftermarket rotor for your bike will have the hole for the magnet. If the rotor on your bike is still in good condition you can sell it.

If you do replace the rotor, perhaps consider swapping to this larger 270mm Tusk disc:

It's probably about the same price as a stock replacement, but will give your front brake a little more power. I have the same one on my 350 and it works great.
Also, I checked - there is a magnet hole:

Re: Front Brake Rotor Speedo and Hour Magnet
Thanks for the input guys!
i went to cycle works yesterday and they had the magnet In stock. I had a conversation with the very knowledgable parts personell and they said drill the hole. I also called my mechanic he said the same thing. More holes the more cooling. Turns out the rims on my bike DNA Racing are tougher to get a KTM rotor or Tusk rotor that will adapt.
Took the rotor off, centre my hole, drilled it out and mounted the magnet.
Speedo and hour meter are back in working order.
Thanks again
