Thigh protection recommendations?

Post by cerealkiller »

Any recommendations for good thigh and hip protection? I'm not able to ride at the moment due to a hematoma on my right thigh. I already wear padded shorts (made by Fly), but apparently that wasn't good enough.

I've considered the Klim Tactical Shorts:

OR MSR Impact Pro:

Neither of those seem like they offer a whole lot more coverage that my current pair, but they do look thicker. Any better ideas?

I was just doing a quick search to see if anyone made shorts with 3DO material and stumbled across this:

Looks interesting... Lots of coverage!

X2 - I have some. Sized on the small side and ride a little low - built for Italian bicycle short guys or something - but the thigh protection is worth it.

I have the Alpinestar Bionic shorts with hard armour and like them a lot. After crashing in some rocks 2 years ago with the foam armour I went looking for something better. The Bionics are sized small and they have an irritating silicone bead along the bottom of the leg opening. After a ride that caused some large blisters I trimmed out a stitch to allow the silicone bead to roll to the outside away from th skin solving the problem. With that done they are great. IMO.
The voices are back. Awesome!

Thanks for the recommendations.

Does anyone know where to get the Forcefield or Alpinestar shorts locally? They both look pretty good. I'm thinking of trying to race on Saturday. I'm not fully recovered, so if I go, I want to have something better on my legs.

I just try to keep my thighs strong with a few lunges every morning. Here is a pic my wife snapped at the beach on the weekend, apologize for the swim shorts.

At the moment, my right thigh is about the same size and similarly nice to look at.
