Not sure but my money would find a low hour 2008- 2010 for $3-4k as its the same bike.

Thanks Cedric,

I have been watching for a CRF250x for a while but they are few and far between. Is this because no one owns one or are they a good reliable bike owners hold on to?

DAMN DECISIONS!

Probably a little of both.

As a point of reference a friend of mine just bought one as his first dirt bike, he found a clean 2005 with the valve upgrades Axel mentioned in your other thread for $2700.

6 grand might get you into the orange / blue koolaid.
IMO, much better trail bikes generally than the Jap MXer conversions.

All right guys, this is the deal.

I have my eye set on Honda CRF250X and 450X. If you have seen my other posts ive been doing a lot of digging on up and downs on these bikes. BIGGEST one right now is valves, everything I've read and you guys have mentioned is proper maintenance and regular clearance checks all of which is standard for all my toys. I have a line on both a 250 and a 450, for around the 4G mark. Any input on the bikes size wise for the style of riding we do? The 250 is lighter probably a little more ergonomically friendly, but more of a concern for valve issues if its ridden close to or in the rev limiter. 450, to be honest kind of gives me the jitters just thinking about it! that's a lot of power that I'm not used to coming off an XR250. there is way less risk for valve issues though due to me probably never being able to ride it to its full potential.

STRUGGLING HARD  with this decision. Any Input would be great, they are both 2005 models with minimal additions, pretty much stock.

THOUGHTS!

I would reccomend the a if you plan to trail ride Mclean and the Ghost. You can't ride a bike in these areas anywhere near the rev limiter for more than a couple of seconds. A symptom of valve issues is, the bike will always start hard cold and fine when hot. I went from a XR400 to the CRF250x, the 250 wasn't a XR400 tractor but it hauled fine on very technical single track and a really trechnical big hill just meant a little clutching and working hard to improve riding skills.

BTW I am 210lbs and currently ride a 150 and really like it 99% of the time. Small bore bikes rock

I haven't owned one but from what I have seen of those that did, the valves on the 250 simply don't last regardless of how it was ridden. Changing the valves from the OEM titanium to the aftermarket steel seems to be the fix. They aren't overly expensive and are easy to change, you simply have to be sure to include it in your bike purchase budget.
I don't believe I have ever heard of a Yamaha 250 having the same issue. Not saying you should give up on the Honda, just making the comment. Any modern bike from either of the big names is a solid performer.

The 450 bikes are big, heavy and over powered for 99% of our riding ( my opinion ). Look around the parking lot at the next club ride and you'll see a very distinct lack of big 4 stroke bikes. It's that way for a reason, people have figured out what works and what doesn't work for our conditions. 2 strokes and the smaller 4t bikes (250-350) are easier to pick up and don't beat you up mile after mile.

All that said, if you have your heart set on a Honda, go get the Honda, ride it and enjoy.
The voices are back. Awesome!

Thanks guys,

I am going to look at 3 to 4 bikes this week, all Honda's, is there anything specific I should be looking for on these bikes? (hard starting, oil leaks, rad leaks) I really don't know much about the liquid cooled bikes as I've only ridden my air cooled XR250 (that I love and want to keep but my wife wont let me have 2 :crybaby: ). I have done my research on putting stainless steel valves into a bike if there needed but would obviously prefer to ride a season or 2 before I do the work.

I know I will probably never get the 450 out of 3rd gear on an everyday ride for what I like doing and the 16lb difference is weight between the 450 and 250 wont be a huge deal as my bike isn't light as is already. Maybe my gut feeling for a 250 is right.

I started my dirt explorations on a KLX 400.
Then went with a 530 Christini, thought I needed more POWER... But started to get drug into the singletrack with my buds...
Then more singletrack, down to a WR450.
Then down to a a TE250 smoker, specifically for the singletrack.
Now, to a YZ250FX for the local gnar and racing.

My buds, the same, 640 - 450 - 2502T - 2504T...

If you need a do it all bike, yes a 450, but locally, since we don't have dunes and much WFO stuff, I'd say smaller is better.
You can still rip a cutline on a twofiddy. :D
Save the weight, have it turn and carry momentum better, less chance of a whiskey throttle too...
