Grip Stud Questions

Post by Wangchung »

I bought a set of 1740 and 1800 grip studs last year and was starting to install them last night.

The tires are Dunlop M51, I know that some people felt these tires no good, but it's the tires that I'm using.
(had a nice set of IRC for this project and they seemed to have disappeared from my tire rack to the rims of a 1980 YZ465 at my fathers house)

Questions in regards to installing studs on the outside knobs on the rear tire
-do you install the stud flush with the knob and follow the contour of the tire, or angle the stud more vertical?
-do you need a stud on every knob on the outside?

Thanks for any information in advance.

When I did a set of MX51s with gripstuds, I did every lug, flush, centered as best as possible to get the most "meat" and prevent splitting.
I also ran Tubliss, so the deep pile of the 1800's might put tubes at risk.

If you have enough 1740s they might work a bit better on the outside smaller rear lugs.

Heads up, my MX51 set didn't last long, so IMO pull the studs as soon as the lugs start to split and build a set on a IRC Volcanduro/M5B set, or the Bridgestone's mentioned in another stud thread.

Thanks, I don't think I'll make it out more than 2-3 times at the folks place. I just want to give it a whirl and see if it something that I may enjoy.

Angle the stud to keep it slightly more vertical, I dont stud every side knob. In a rear M5B I run about 180 studs. The issues with the side knob studs is if you get in a icy rut the side grabs and tries to pull you out all the time. Also run 15 to 20 lbs tire pressure as a minimum for winter riding, studs seem to hold up and grab better.
