One of the things on my winter maintenance list is lubing the starter on my 250 XC-W. I notice that Slavens has a video up where he advocates filling the starter/ignition housing with oil instead of using grease. Is this really a better procedure?

Re: greasing KTM starter
Some guys do the oil modification. I always just cleaned and greased up the gears and bushings on mine 2 stroke.
Re: greasing KTM starter
I did this on one of my last 300's. It worked OK, but would just opt to grease it 1-2 times a year.
If you do, here are some tips...
Do not over fill the oil, as all of the extra will blow out of the breather.
Make sure your breather line is routed up high and back down and does not kinked.
If it kinks, it will blow out the silicone seal that you use to plug the drain hole.
In the end, I found this was a PIA to do. I had to seal the cover twice to get it to seal.
I wouldn't bother again. Doesn't matter now anyway now that I ride a 350XC.
