I recommend standing up. No specialty shorts required...

Troy Lee Designs 4600 padded shorts. A bit pricy but they will last a very long time.

I picked up a pair of the cheap ARC branded shorts, liking them so far, the hip pads are a feature you don't see on the bicycle shorts, otherwise they are much the same. I could have sworn I got these from GnarlyParts, but don't see any clothing/gear at all on their website now, so I dunno...

Picked up a pair of the EVS Tactial Under Gear shorts they were 60bucksish. They have a chamois area to keep everything cool and a butt pad insert. So far so good. I also have several pairs of underarmor shorts that hold up well to abuse they are definately cheaper.

Isn't MEC one of those sneaky anti-dirt bike companies?

Alpinstar Bionic shorts. They have hard hip and tail bone armor. Great it you find yourself "away" from your bike often
