I was on the market for one of those fancy shmancy plastic skid plates but was totally turned off by the price. Ridiculous! So ridiculous that I got inspiration to make my own after I seen a couple topics covering this. I think most have used a cutting board from walmart or something like that but I didn't like how thick it was. So I check out Norwesco Industries for some 1/8 inch HD polyethylene which is pretty much commercial grade cutting board material but again was turned off by the price. Then I decided to look into UHMW (ultra high molecular weight) polyethylene which is what a plastic pallet is made out of.....super strong and extremely durable. So happens that I found a mint plastic pallet at work left behind by a transport truck so I took it home. Then made a template out of my old works connection guide plate I had lying around and here is the result.
I was able to get 4 blanks out of the pallet but got it right the first try. I made a template out of cardboard for future use.
After I cut out the design with some added flaps to protect the ignition cover and water pump from debris, mounted it up using the existing hardware from my old skid plate and some used some low profile allen head bolts I found in my parts box. With a little help from a heat gun I got it molded to the bottom of my bike and mounted it firmly.
Total cost....$10 and that was for the 6-pack of beer I drank while working on it
the last skid plate i made, i used puck board from a ice rink. This stuff is tough, and lasted 7 years on my bike before i sold it. probably still on that bike and working.
