McLean - Mount Barwell - SNOW

Post by BurntTimber »

Hey all,

Thumpin71 and I staged at South Fisher Creek and headed up the switchback to Barwell ridge and took the Barwell Mountain trail from there. Snow drifts are still 2-4' deep, so spikes are a must have. If you have trellbergs or can keep your momentum you'll be able to follow our trail up to where we made it (up to Westhills).

We cleared as much deadfall as we could but some chainsaws will be required up there and we just didn't have the setup with us. I've attached a few pics, it's definitely going to be at least 2-3 weeks before the snow clears enough for knobbys to make'er through.

I was out in McLean on sunday with what seamed like ten thousand quads. Still tons of snow, I did not find any single track trails that were passable on rubber. The snow was so heavy and deep in spots studs would not be much better. Lots of ice lurking under a skim of mud at lower elevations in the shadded areas, got me a couple of times.

Just need to wait 2 weeks and try again.

Yup, we really had to keep the momentum going with the bolted tires. Definitely lots of times we were digging ourselves out. On our way back down we had two sets of hikers following our trail up. They thanked us for breaking trail in the snow for them

2 weeks should do it in most places. Dark side of Swanny's will definitely still have some drifts then.
