I am pretty sure this was a trail used for bikes/scramble/something as you could tell bikes had been using it, the trail zig-zagged crazyily through the trees, and it was cut just wide enough for bikes. Many trees were marked at handlebar height from contact in the tight quaters.
If what you say is true, would the loggers clear cut the area and leave a row fo trees on either side of the "trail" or something?

Yeah, these bike trails are marked with white so that hopefully the loggers don't cut the whole area. It isn't perfect but it's better than nothing.
It has an added benefit that you pretty much know that it is a motorcycle trail if you see the white ribbons. It helps you follow the trail. Some of my favourite trails are marked with white ribbons.
