Grizzly Trail Logging

I rode out of South Fisher this weekend but when driving through I saw almost the entire SW face from just past the camp office to about 3k is all logged. Is Grizzly Trail gone now? Trail marker 78 to 228? I guess if the trails are preserved it's better than having a massive fire but I'm kinda bummed out about all the logging that's happened in the last couple seasons.

I rode up there last week, so far only horizon trail has been affected and the logging company has done a decent job of preserving the trail so far. The RMDRA is working with the logging company to try and minimize to the designated single track trails. Unfortunately logging is a necessary evil in these areas, if they weren’t allowed to harvest there’s a good chance we wouldn’t be allowed to ride there either.

Fair enough. It's definitely better as managed deforestation rather than forest fire destroying everything. Thanks Boland.

When are they starting on Swany’s? I would like to ride it one last time before half the mountain is cut down.

Also how much of Johnny two skidoo and Viagra will be impacted? Along with Outlaw and the bottom portion of That 70’s trail being prepared it’s going to take away a 1/4 of the nicest single track we had once the Horizon’s are pretty much gone.

I have an email into our contacts at Spray Lakes Sawmills. Originally Swany's was not supposed to be harvested until 2020/2021. We have two width controls on Swany's which has worked very well in keeping quads out, we have asked SLS to install width control after harvest.
If nothing has changed from the harvest plan SLS gave us in 2018, Grizzly will not be logged.
There is not supposed to be cut blocks on Outlaw or That 70's trail, are you saying SLS has cutblock boundry/roads ribbin up?
Almost all of J2S will be nuked. None of Viagra is supposed to be logged.

Things are happening fast out there so I'm just hoping for some clarification:

Horizon South is - gone or preserved?
Horizon North is - gone or preserved?
Swany's is getting logged but the trail is going to be preserved?
Jonny 2 Skidoos is going to be gone?
Outlaw and That 70's are going to be - gone or preserved?

Are we going to be able to build new trails to replace the ones that are permanently gone? Seem like it is going to take alot of work to preserve or fix these logged trails. Please sign me up if that's the case.

In order for SLS to operate in McLean they have to preserve any designated trails. So the answer to all of your listed trails is they will be preserved with the exception of Outlaw & That 70's Trail. I am waiting for a reply from Takethebounce in regards to the ribbon he has referenced because according SLS there is no scheduled logging to be done on Outlaw and That 70's Trail.
We have been working with SLS to move logging roads off our ST as well as move Cut block boundaries slightly to miss our ST on certain trails.
Swany's will be logged this winter. SLS will be installing width controls after harvest to try and keep quads out. They have said they moved the west end of their boundary so it misses our ST trail.

Ahh okay. Thank you for the information. Is there anyway members can assist in trail preservation or repair? I know that organized trail maintenance has been restricted by the government lately correct? I'd be happy to pitch in any way I can.

We often have some clean up/repair after they are done harvesting. The club is very close to get a trail maintenance pass for McLean this year, once we have that we can get back at it.
Thanks for helping out.

I rode Outlaw and That's 70's on Wednesday and there was no evidence of logging ribbon that I noticed. I also rode Horizon North which was mostly fine but the logging machinery was within earshot and given'r so I'm not sure how much more of that trail will be affected. Horizon South (N to S) is toast as far as I could tell. I rode in a couple hundred yards and then the trail joined the logging road and I could not find where it continued. It's messy in there. Maybe I just missed a junction?

Unfortunate to hear. Horizon was a great trail on that side of McLean.

We rode Horizon yesterday, we found where the trail joined. It's not too bad, there is a short section of logging road but then you can hop back on. It looks like they are working on cleaning up the entrance so that it is more evident. A trail intersection sign would help out.

Thanks for the info. That's great news. How far up the road is the junction? I rode up and down within a 200m distance and couldn't find anything. Does the trail continue on the uphill side or the downhill side of the logging road?

Not very far, it's on the right if you are headed south. The backhoe made a bit of a dug out entrance. It's just before the top of the hill where the road turns left.

Sorry I haven’t been back on the forum to notice this.

The ribbon I observed was on the south end of that 70’s trail and on the back side of Outlaw though it’s been several weeks since I have been back to that side since I wanted to ride the West as much as possible.

If you came in on the North end of that 70’s, rode South to marker 176 then to 174 over to 166 I saw new ribbon in that area. If I make it over there this weekend I will look for it and confirm it’s location. Is Spray the only company currently logging the area?

I wish “preserving” the trail was more than leaving a few half cut off trees.

On the topic of width control, i believe it’s come up before I know but can the access to Quirk be taken back from the Quads?
