Sand Riding for the Winter

Post by twitch13 »

I'm looking to do some sand training this winter. Does anyone know of any good sand dune riding areas that are good to ride during the winter months? I have briefly checked Moab but it looks like more rock than sand, I could be mistaken. Any input or advice would be helpful.

It's closer than Moab, but still a long haul - the Owyhee desert area just west of Boise, Idaho is excellent in winter. It's typical desert terrain - some sand washes, some rock gardens, some high desert mountain, but you can ride two or three days a week for a couple winters without getting completely burned out on the trails. Literally everything from 100 mph (oh yeah - it's km's up here, OK, so make that 160 km :D ) to 10km rock gardens, and everything in between.

I'm jealous - I love riding that stuff. Art

Looks like 10" of average annual accumulation to me. I would expect some big drifts of snow just the same.

I missed an emoticon  Unintentional deadpan.

I didn't expect it to be that wintery... I guess it is pretty close to Yellowstone. Where Art suggested sounds more like what I had in mind.

Ya, first time I was there I was in early late may early june, it was 33 deg during the day and on my way back highways was threatening to close some highways due to high flood risk from melting snow pack. Its almost 5000 feet elevation.
