Hey all,
I am new to the club and wanted to know more about the upcoming HS July 19/20. I used to race motocross some 20 years ago, a.k.a before wife and kids. Now I am back in the saddle again! I going out to the Guide Ride on Wednesday and hope to find out more about the HS thing. BTW, I am 42 and running a 06 CRF250X, I believe I am a pretty good rider; however, will find out come Wednesday! Questions...
1) Can I get a race license just for the day, i.e. to try it out?
2) How do I know what number I should put on my bike?
3) I am assume with my age and skill level I should be in Vet Junior... will they be gentle with me
4) Do I need any sort of pit support, or can just me, myself and I show up?
Thanks to all!
David Wagner

Newbie wants to race
Re: Newbie wants to race
Hey David, good to hear that you're interested in trying our Harescramble.
Here are some answers to your questions;
1) Yes you can buy a one day CMRC race license for $40.
-don't forget the race entry fee is $45 also.
2)choose an oddball number or three digit number and you'll
be less likely to have a conflict. A roll of electrical tape will help
amend any conflicts at the race site! The front #plate is the priority
for the race staff to identify you at checkin, side plate #s aren't as important.
Your numbers should be black on a white background.
You can see the numbers already used this year here:
http://www.cmrcracing.com/results/default.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
3)Vet Junior is where you start-see you on the line! As far as being gentle
I wouldn't worry too much. I find that other than the first ten minutes,
I'm usually alone just riding my pace. Just remember when a faster rider
comes barreling up behind you and revs up or hollers to let you know they
are there, move over at the first safe opportunity and let them by.
4)You'll be fine to come by yourself, lots of us do too.
Stop by my truck (red chevy, blue bike)and introduce yourself.
See you at the races!

Re: Newbie wants to race
You will have a blast. The Vet Juniors are a pretty gentle class but can get very competitive if you are a front runner. Please come out this weekend to the race set-up to get a peak at the terrain you will be riding.
See you there.

Re: Newbie wants to race
When twotired say's after ten minutes he is alone you should interpret that to mean, he is by the side of the trail, picking up parts of his bike and/or body..... David it is increadibly different from moto, and you will play some interesting mind games with yourself, my only advice is to make sure u have water! (and a little duct tape so you can stop and help twotired)

Thanks for the information everyone! Will stop by your truck twotired, as for duct tape, may needed it myself as I am riding a Honda! As for the setup this weekend, I would love to come out however I have a wedding (on my wife's side) and I have to spend the weekend with all her family... rather be stuck in a mud hole
As for the terrain, is this all natural or are there man made obstacles on the course? Saw some pictures on the website and thought are they combining Trials with cross country?
Stupid question about the numbering, you mention that I need to have the numbers on the front number plate, I have my AB license plate mounted there. Can I take it off or do I have to have that mounted and visable also?

Re: Newbie wants to race
For the races we get an exemption from Ab Transportation so that we do not require plates or insurance to be in the race. No lights required either but we do sound test obnoxiously loud bikes. The limit is 96db.dwagner wrote:Thanks for the information everyone! Will stop by your truck twotired, as for duct tape, may needed it myself as I am riding a Honda! Re: Newbie wants to race
The terrain for a hare scramble is mostly all natural. (Sometimes a MX track can be put in the loop) The Grizzly HS at McLean Creek will be all natural terrain.dwagner wrote:As for the terrain, is this all natural or are there man made obstacles on the course? The terrain for an Enduro Cross is much like combining Trials with a hare scramble course.
I started racing HS in Vet Junior. My method for the 1st few races was to let everyone go ahead off the start before I would start and then ride the loop and try to pass the slower riders in my class. I recommend this technique because it takes away all of the aggressive start (if there is one) and allows an enjoyable ride at your pace. If your pace happens to be faster than another rider in front of you, then you will learn how to pass.

Re: Newbie wants to race
There are TWO race series in alberta.
The CMRC has ALOT more races than CMA, however similar format with barcode scorekeeping I believe
Race Schedule is here.
http://www.albertadirtriders.com/schedule2008.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
the CMA (second gear club) Has a 6 race series, with similar racing to the CMRC, our numbers are a bit lower, however we do offer a sunday sportsman (newbie) racing class for those who do not wish to be as competitive as the novice class, Novice class is pretty tame in the CMA ranging from 16 year olds to 30 year olds. You could just come race Vet in CMA as it is a pretty tame class as well. We do not require number plates right now as we rely on barcode scorekeeping which the SGC introduced into the alberta racing series in 2007 with the help of MRSI its main sponsor.
SGC OFFERS DAY LICENSES!
Check out CMA results at http://www.secondgearclub.com/results" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and view lap times to get an idea of what experts/intermediates/vets are doing.
