Fun GPS Trail Facts

Postby Hooligan » Sat Dec 03, 2016 3:39 pm

I was a bit bored and organizing my GPS tracks when I figured I'd add up all the single track in McLean Creek and see what it came to. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to the total length of single track in McLean? Hint: Its a fair bit less than I had expected.

Barwell Mountain is the longest at 10.9 km (depending on where you start measuring from)
Swany's Ridge is the second longest at 9.3 km

Cashmere is the shortest at 810m and that is being generous and measuring from the top of the first hill.

Beer Bong is the shortest real trail at 840m (Party Zone has multiple arms which add up to more length)
Quirk North is the second shortest at 1.0 km but I bet hardly anyone has even ridden it, let alone knows how to find it.

I don't own a GPS, but I will guess 191 km.
Cashmere was an after thought. After creating the single track map, we realized it was a slog on bombed out truck trails to connect That 70's and Barbie/Cloud nine, so Cashmere was added as a fun connector.
Party zone is only suppose to have one trail connecting Fisher East road and Stallions, but keeping signage up is impossible and the Quad traffic is very high there.
Quirk North was added as a connector out the main truck trail, but no one uses it preferring to ride Viagra Ridge. Between the 2013 flooding and the Willow growth its not alot of fun to ride and it is very hard to find from the west end, the east end is easy to find as its the only cutline that crosses Viagra ridge.
I would have thought West Hills would have been up there in length? How did you make out riding it, that one needs some work. It is/was on the flood recovery list.

Trailguy:

I haven't ridden all of Westhills so it is broken up into several files. I should make up a single file to see how long it is. The bits of Westhills I have seen are all quite overgrown and not much fun to ride.

We rode Quirk North once and are not super keen to do it again. Not so much fun that one.

Speaking of Viagra Ridge reminds me I have discovered a number of trails have "parallel" sections and these may not be well marked. We got on to a part of Barwell 2nd that was a bit nasty with all the fighting our way through the trees. Not sure exactly how we ended up on that section. I'd need to go back and see the exact spot where we made the wrong turn.

FWIW Westhills looks to be approx 6.0 kms. It doesn't clock up the distance like most trails because it is so straight.

To be clear, this is an estimate based on the trails I have actually ridden and not intended to be a definitive answer, it looks like we have approximately 175kms of single track in McLean Creek. Which is considerably less than I would have guessed.
