Local resale value and depreciation of 4-strokes

Post by Rider Eh! »

Hey all,

For those of you buying and selling modern off-road four strokes lately (in particular KTM 250,350,450's), what are you seeing as a yearly depreciation on them? Assuming we all pay MSRP, can you expect $1000/yr drop in resale or more or less?

I know what the 2-strokes are going for, and they seem to hold value well. The perception has always been that people don't want to buy used thumpers as they are time bombs, and therefor they sell for less. I'm trying to verify if this is the case locally.

For KTMs, I'd say used 350/450 bikes may even have better than 2S resale, especially for the 2013 and up models. The latest motors have proven very desirable on the used bike market. Four strokes seem to be the latest trend now, as more and people try them. Maybe because they think they're better, or maybe just to not ride the same 250/300 2S that they had 6 or 7 years ago.

250 FS are in a world of their own, mostly undeserved for the off road bikes as they are also very durable. Just not when they spend 50% of their time at the rev limiter on MX tracks. Pricing for them seems to be up and down.

I agree with AJRJ. The resale on 4 strokes is fine. It seems that people have finally realized that the new 4 strokes are not the ticking time bombs they were 10-15yrs ago (yep, that long, the first YZ400 came out in 1998). I've had 5, 4 strokes and no trouble selling any of them (even sold one for more than I paid for it).

i have sold a 06 in 09.
An 09 in 11.
a 10 (not used until 12) in 14.
i let them go for less than market value as i do not need to squeeze every last dollar out of them. Happy buyer = happy buyer.
Also, have never had any problems with 4 strokes.
Every valve check ever done was spot on except for the carbed 06, it needed adjusting.

Let me guess, you have a 2 stroke for sale and made this thread to reinforce the myth that 4 strokes are ticking time bombs so you can eek out max $$$$ for your 2 stroke

After doing a quick look on Kijiji I'm seeing 2014's go for $1-2k less than MSRP right now. Though I understand it isn't high selling season.

4-strokes seemed to hold value well for the first couple years then start to taper off quickly......a 2-stroke will hold value longer. It isn't so much as a problem with durability as my old 06 yz450f was great until I sold it back in 2012.....just changing a top end becomes tiresome and there will always be the lingering thought in the back of your head that if they grenade it won't be pretty.

Nothing is better then a brand new, crisp 2 stroke...it is the ultimate dirt bike!! The only problem is that smokers clap out way quicker then thumpers. They need more maintenance and they get the raspy, rattle quicker...just saying?!
Thumpers need bigger, more expensive repairs, but it seams to come at half the rate as a smoker. So in the end, same difference.

Either way, your best bet is always a 300/250 smoker, but I'm just a thumper enthusiast. So ride what ever turns your crank...major pun here! After all, your paying the upfront costs.

Why would anyone buy a dirt bike for resale value?? That's insane. Figure out what you love to ride and then buy it!!! It might be a difference of 1K in the long run, but at least you are happy.
This sport is all about finding your style and preference, don't let anyone tell you what's best, buy what you love, find your own passion.
