I've been following this closely on the net.

I have to say, it looks absolutely awesome. Looking forward to a release, and also to see the new 790 LC8c in the hands of Duke owners for some real life reviews.

There's a lot of opinions and speculation out there, it's hard to separate fact from fiction at this point. One thing is for sure though, that KTM continues to push the envelope. This bike looks to be absolutely on point as far as I'm concerned. Having had the pleasure of riding an 1190R on a street demo, and a 1090R off road, if this is the lighter, more off road capable version, I'm in, in, in. I can hardly wait to give it a go...

(It's Geoff, btw :D )

Too heavy for me as they are claiming 440lbs, I'd like to see a 590 please! I may have to try one for a test drive, but still loving my XR650R.

Something around sub 300 lbs dry, ability to fit a large tank at a good price, 6 speed, and infrequent oil changes is what the market is missing in a modern bike. But no one is listening :crybaby:

KTM 690 or Husky 701

320 and 330 respectively in weight.

13 litre capacity (265 KMS range) and option of auxiliary 5.9 litre tank to bring you up to 400 KMS

10,000 KMS service intervals (yes you read that correct 10,000!!)

Slipper clutch

ABS

I rode one last year and enjoyed it a ton. Building a Rally version right now to take to Baja next month.

The 790 KM will be the biggest demand bike when it is released as it is a twin and 100 pound liter than the BMW F800 and Triumph Tiger (equivalent in this class). I was at the EICMA show in Italy a few weeks back at the launch and this was one of the bikes that received to most attention from importers and dealers around the world. Wish I was a KTM dealer just for this bike alone.

My XRR is about 300 dry without goodies. 26L tank, almost 400km range. And the tank only cost like $200 used! Those 690 tanks are pricey. Did a 6500km trip up the Continental Divide on it years back. Oil changes at 2k, filters at 4k.

No doubt an awesome bike, but no E start... :D

I'm at a point where fuel injection is mandatory as well. The KTMs I've owned have been dead nuts reliable, and the fact that I've never had the sub frame off is priceless...

Being a guy who also owns an XRR I fully appreciate it's charms. The thing is lightweight (compared to other big singles), powerful, reliable as a claw hammer, and given its Baja pedigree, there's a certain intangible cool factor to it that few bikes have. That being said, I've rode both, and I have to admit the 690/701 is a superior bike in almost every way. And so it should be, it's a cutting edge piece of design, whereas the XR was designed 20 years ago. The fact that people still make comparisons between these two goes to show how ahead of its time Honda was with that bike, but at the end of the day it still falls behind the Austrian machine. The 690/701 has a 20 horsepower advantage, is only marginally heavier, way better brakes, hydro slipper clutch, e-start, cush drive, etc. The only only areas I feel the Honda is better are a slight edge in handling (it feels like a heavy dirtbike, where the KTM/Husky feels like a lightweight street bike, if that makes any sense), it's cheaper to fix, and it's long term reliability can't be touched (as in 700+ hours with zero issues). In every other way the Austrian bike is better. The only question is: is it 10 grand better? And that question is entirely up to the beholder.

Hey Geoff, didn't you take my 950SER for a ride to 'test' it?
How was that compared to 1190?
i still think pound for pound, the 950SER is the best dual sport dirt happy bike ever made.
Range is only 180kms, but with one rotopax i am good for 240kms at any speed.
Too bad they are no longer made.

Hi Tom

Yeah you're at least partially to blame for all this. :D That ride on your 950 SER was a blast, and really opened my eyes as to what is capable on a well set up machine. I don't know the best way to rate this, but I'll keep to to my actual experience with KTMs. If my 450 XCF is a 10 off road, a 1090R would be a 5? Your 950 would be a 6-7? Really only the weight holding it back from doing anything. I would say the hope for the new 790 is only for it to be just as good as the original 950 SER. Although it will be FI, ABS, etc. (Read: lots more weight) as well as small fairings that the 950 SER never had.

The 950 SERs are a total cult machine I've come to realize. They are rare and definitely sell for a premium.

Thanks again for the chance to twist the grip.

Honda were idiots in not making the XRR a strret legal bike
Add e start and street legal bits....
They would have sold truck loads...

If the KTM 790 is around 400lbs I'd be interested....anything above 450lbs and its too close to bother switching.
I've got my 1190 pretty much the way I want it...but lifting up 500lbs + is getting harder n harder.
And really do I need 150hp....it's a knobby tire destroyer
