Register a 50cc?

Post by SteveOg »

First post for me here, but I recognize a lot of names from 4Wheeler and the Jeep board. I'm SteveO or Steveogs on those, but have been busy with other stuff for a few years but am getting back on the dirt.

Anyways, I picked up a CRF50 for my kids but was wondering if it was worth registering? A few guys have told me not to bother with a 50 and that nobody will ever ask as long as I've got my plate and insurance. What do you guys think?

Also, any suggestions on a good spot to take my kids out and get them comfortable on the bike? Nice flat field is preferred and ideally on the west side of the city. I'll probably just ride with them on my mountain bike for now. Thanks! ....Steve

When I check it out the told me anything under 50cc is "unregisterable" since a pw 50 is actually 49cc I went away happy...

Good to know, thanks.

How does that work legally for riding around in the city? Today at work I was told under 50CC the kid can put around in a park, etc. That didn't seem right to me, but it would be great if it was true.

I recently inquired about the same thing.

Here is a link that defines vehicle requirements:

http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/Co ... _final.pdf

It felt it would be classified as a minitature vehicle(substandard size) and would not require insurance or registration. To be sure I emailed in and here is the reply I received:

Thank you for your provincial government web inquiry of May 29, 2012 regarding the use of a mini off-road ATV while on public land.

To be used on public land a miniature ATV must be registered and insured. Without registration and insurance a miniature ATV can only be used on private property.

To be registered an ATV must have a compliance label showing it complies with safety standards. The label will also show the vehicle identification number (VIN).

A miniature ATV cannot be registered as it does not have a VIN and may not have a head lamp, a tail lamp, and a spark arresting muffler.

Alberta law requires off-highway vehicles to be licensed and insured when on public land. To view the Traffic Safety Act sections 117 to 129, please see this web link: http://www.qp.gov.ab.ca/documents/acts/T06.cfm.

If you need more information, please contact me.

Sincerely,

So....if you got a VIN you should be free to register and insure. Then make sure you add-on the headligh and tail light.

my story...

was told by my insurance that they will not isure anyone under 16years of age. seeing as my kids are 12-10 they will not register their bikes as they are the primary drivers of their bikes (crf70's) i had them give me a letter stating their position on this. then installed head and tail lights on both bikes and they ride with us every weekend. have been stopped many many times and all i ride with are complient except the kids...srd has said they are not allowed to ride on public land and i produce the letter and say perfect give my 10 year old the ticket as the ownership papers are in her name and we will see you in court (personally i would LOVE to get in front of a judge with this case!!!) have not had one officer take me up on the challenge tho as of yet. if your insurance company wont insure the owner of the vehicle as they are under age you cant get registration. had many people say tell them that the bike is mine and then we can insure... so basically commit insurance fraud as im not the owner or operator of the bikes.so thats my story. until they are 16 we will continue on this way until a judge tells me differently...

We insure my nephews crf70 no problem. He was 10 I think when he got it. Have a plate on it as well.

My other nephew this year will hopefully move up to the 70 but has had 2 50's. Neither of them were registered. I got asked to show paper work once but since I had none for the 50 I couldn't. Just told them it was under 50cc and didn't require registration. I forget if my sister had ins for that bike as I think she might have in case of theft and the liability if her son hit someone's vehicle or something.

I also had a 70cc Chinese quad. Had ins and a plate on it.

If your ins company won't ins a 70cc then look elsewhere. My broker said my reg ins company didn't do Atv etc but they found a company that would.

You need it for the 70.
I'm stoked, 2 stroked!

So I spoke with my neighbor, who is a long time traffic cop, and he said it isn't an issue to take a kid out to a community park in the city and let them ride around on a 50. I figure I'll give it a shot in the spring and see if anyone has an issue with it. He said he'd even come down with me and bring his kids to have a go on it.
