Just watched it last night on the PVR.....Barcia took off and made it look way too easy. Wait until they head on to east end of the country where he is familiar with the tracks.

There is a new sheriff in town

Round 3 of the 2013 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, Angel Stadium, Anaheim, California –

Qualifying times for the 250 SX class, it’s former World MX2 Champion Kenny Roczen of RedBull KTM on top with the quickest lap of 54.51 seconds. Martin Davalos of the Pro Circuit team is next – 54.76. Defending West Champion Eli Tomac is third at 54.9 seconds. The rest of the top ten – Jason Anderson, Zach Osborne, Ryan Sipes, Cole Seely, Christian Craig, Jake Canada, and Max Anstie (56.3).

Qualifying times for the 450′s …it’s defending series champion Ryan Villopoto quickest at 52.97 seconds. Ryan Dungey is next – 53.65. Then it’s James Stewart, who is riding with a torn ACL in his knee, at 53.9 seconds. Fourth thru tenth – Davi Millsaps, , Chad Reed, Trey Canard, Justin Barcia, Justin Brayton, Broc Tickle, and Jake Weimer (55.3).

Ryan Villopoto quickest in timed practice 450 SX Anaheim 2 2013

Opening ceremonies. And a big shocker. Kevin Windham has announced his retirement. He did two of his famous ‘transfers’, one of his famous ‘nose wheelies’ …. and … is retired from professional racing. Read Kevin’s quotes on his retirement here.
t
7:38pm. The first 250 heat takes off. The early leader is number 40, Martin Davalos. But Ryan Sipes number 35 makes a move on Davalos to take over the lead!

Lap four of this six lap race – Davalos does a nice jump at the star of a big jump section and passes Sipes back for the lead. And then just a few hundred yards later – Sipes passes him back! It’s Sipes out front, Davalos right behind, and Sipes’ Rockstar Suzuki team-mate Jason Anderson right behind in third.

Sipes is going to win … and the last corner before the checkered flag – Anderson makes the pass on Davalos! It’s Sipes, Anderson, and Davalos 1, 2, 3.

250 Heat 2. It was Jessy Nelson of TLD with the early lead … but Kenny Roczen (94) goes by quickly. And he’s already pulling out a lead. Nelson is second … and he’s got Eli Tomac right behind him.

Tomac moves into second. It’s Roczen, a former world motocross champion, leading Tomac – the current 250 West Regional Supercross Champion. Should be good …

Roczen and Tomac are way ahead of third place Zach Osborne. There are two laps to go in this six lap heat …

This is a difficult supercross track. Lots of obstacles. And the condition of the track – in some parts dusty in the afternoon, is now perfect.

Ken Roczen has won this race. Eli Tomac finishes just over 2 seconds behind Roczen. Third is Jessy Nelson, then Tyla Rattray, Dakota Tedder, and Osborne drops to sixth.

450 Supercross Heat 1: Looks like a big crash as they head down the start straight. And it includes series points leader Davi Millsaps. Justin Brayton is in the lead. Millsaps mechanics rush his bike back out to the pits, as Davi walks slowly in that direction as well.

This race will go eight laps. The top eight at the halfway point are: Justin Brayton, Mike Alessi, Trey Canard, Robert Kiniry, Josh Grant, Vince Friese, Matt Lemoine, and Ben LaMay. Ryan Dungey is 11th!

Justin Brayton wins this race by a nice margin. Trey Canard finishes second. Mike Alessi third. Then it’s Kiniry, Grant, Friese, Lemoine, Jake Weimer, Ryan Dungey, and Ben LaMay tenth. Dungey qualifies.

450 Supercross Heat 2: It’s the number 1 of Ryan Villopoto in the lead. Matt Goerke is second. James Stewart is third. The pace is frenetic.

With Villopoto already pulling a lead at the end of lap one, Stewart moves to second. And then it’s Kyle Chisholm, Chad Reed up to fourth, Broc Tickle, Matt Goerke, Andrew Short, Weston Peick, Justin Barcia and Chris Blose round out the top ten.

Reed has moved to third. The top three are quite spread out – Villopoto first, Stewart second, Reedy third.

Ryan Villopoto dominates this race. Stewart is second, Reed third.

The 450 LCQ. This race goes six laps. And only the top two advance to the Main Event. And there are two top riders in this race – Justin Barcia and Davi Millsaps.

Out front on the first lap – it’s Justin Barcia, followed by Davi Millsaps!

On lap five, Millsaps makes a nice move on Barcia and takes over the lead. These two are going at it pretty aggressively considering it’s an LCQ. Millsaps wins it! Barcia second! They go to the Main …

It’s time for the 250 Main Event. 15 laps. At 9:23pm it’s Ken Roczen and Cole Seely side by side in the first corner! Seely emerges the leader. There are a couple of falls as well – we can see Max Anstie limping off the track.

The three fastest guys in the class are up front. It’s currently Cole Seely leading Ken Roczen, and Eli Tomac is chasing both of them.

Those top three riders have checked out. Five laps in they are way ahead of the rest of the pack. Seely leads, and Tomac is very close on Roczen.

The top three are very close … and at the end of lap 9 Tomac goes past Roczen on the inside of a left hander corner before the finish jump.

On the start of lap 11, Tomac goes around the outside of the first corner and passes Seely for the lead! It’s Tomac, Seely, Roczen – all still close!

Tomac is starting to pull a slight lead, and Roczen has pushed past Seely. It’s Tomac one, Roczen two, Seely three.

Eli Tomac wins his third 250 West Supercross Main in a row

Eli Tomac wins his third 250 West Supercross Main in a row

The 450 Supercross Main Event. 20 laps. At 9:57pm Jake Weimer number 12 rockets into the lead. He’s chased by the two Honda Muscle Milk riders – Justin Barcia and Trey Canard!

On lap 2, Trey Canard moves into the lead! It’s Canard, Weimer, Barcia. Davi Millsaps is fourth. Chad Reed is sixth. James Stewart seventh. Ryan Dungey eighth. And Ryan Villopoto is on the move …

Hectic lap. Barcia lands hard from a jump – looks like he hurt his wrist. He is pulling off the track. Villopoto has moved all the way up to second. (Later on some have said he might of hit his face or nose quite hard. TBD.)

As they settle now starting lap six, it’s Canard leading Villopoto by about 2 seconds. By the end of this lap though – Villopoto has rushed right past Canard and into the lead!

Lap seven now – Villopoto already stretching his lead. Canard is second. Davi Millsaps is third. Chad Reed is fourth. Weimer is fifth. And Stewart goes down in a tight right hand corner – he is up and running … outside the top ten.

Lap 12 – Ryan Villopoto is leading by a big margin over Trey Canard. Davi Millsaps is third, and he’s being chased by Chad Reed. Then it’s Jake Weimer, Andrew Short, and Ryan Dungey.

As they start lap 16, Reed moves past Millsaps. And then Millsaps returns the favor! As they start lap 18, Millsaps spins the rear tire a bit too much, and Reed moves by!

This race belongs to Ryan Villopoto. It’s his first supercross main event victory since April of 2012. Trey Canard is second, Chad Reed third. (Results below.)

Here is the 450 Main in its entirety, minus cbs going to a commercial  ... Do not read race summary before you watch this
how do you embed...grrrr?

In 250 SX West timed practice, it’s Kenny Roczen on the Red Bull KTM quickest at 56.33 seconds. Next is Jason Anderson at 57 seconds. Zach Osborne, Martin Davalos, and Eli Tomac at 57.4 seconds. 58 riders at attempting to qualify.

In 450 SX time practice, it’s James Stewart the quickest at 55.1 seconds. Ryan Dungey is next with 56.66 seconds. Ryan Villopoto is next at 56.3. Then it’s Trey Canard, Chad Reed, Davi Millsaps, Broc Tickle, Josh Grant, Matt Goerke, Justin Barcia, Jake Weimer, and Justin Brayton 12th at 56.9. 50 riders at attempting to qualify.

As practice comes to a close, and the sun starts to set – it is starting to get a bit cold.

250 SX Heat 1 – 7:36pm. The start goes to Christian Craig. There is a crash in the first corner. It involves series points leader Eli Tomac. He gets going dead last …

As they settle, it’s Troy Lee Designs teammates Christian Crag and Jessy Nelson out front. Then Craig hits the dirt. There have been a lot of crashes already as we start lap three of this six lap race.

The running order – Jessy Nelson, Tyla Rattray, Jake Canada, Cole Seely, Jason Anderson, Christian Craig …. Eli Tomac is tenth.

The top nine will transfer directly to the Main Event. Jessy Nelson leads Tyla Rattray by a comfortable margin. And Jessy Nelson wins! Tyla Rattray is second. Jason Anderson third. Then Seely, Canada, Craig, Eli Tomac seventh, Jean Ramos, Chris Plouffe, and Max Anstie tenth.

250 SX Heat 2 – 7:50pm. Lots of guys enter the first corner ‘first’, but Zach Osborne emerges out of the first corner in first place. Ken Roczen is second, Martin Davalos is third.

On the second lap, in the hardest part of the big sandy u-turn corner (the exit at the end) Ken Roczen bursts past Osborne and into the lead. As they start the third lap it’s Roczen out front, Osborne second, Davalos third, Joey Savatgy fourth, and Malcolm Stewart fifth.

This six lap race win goes to Kenny Roczen. Zach Osborne is second. Martin Davalos third. Then Joey Savatgy and Malcolm Stewart fourth and fifth.

450 SX Heat 1 – 8:06pm. It’s Justin Brayton with the lead out of the first corner … but Davi Millsaps makes the pass coming down the long straight heading into the third corner. The ‘sand’ corner. And a few riders in the pack go down in that corner as well.

Millsaps is stretching out his lead on the second lap. Good battle for second – it’s Brayton, Ryan Dungey, and Trey Canard all close together.

Right at the end of lap three, both Dungey and Canard make the move on Brayton. So it’s Millsaps out front, Dungey now about 3.5 seconds back. Canard chasing Dungey. Then Brayton, followed by Josh Grant and Justin Barcia.

This race will go eight laps. The top nine will transfer directly to the 450 Main Event.

The top three are gone – Millsaps, Dungey, Canard. They are far ahead of the rest. And Dungey and Canard are gaining on Millsaps …

It’s Davi Millsap winning, Ryan Dungey and Trey Canard right behind.

450 SX Heat 2 – 8:22pm. Three are three Supercross Champions in this race – James Stewart, Chad Reed, and Ryan Villopoto. And it’s current Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series Champion Ryan Villopoto on the number 1 Kawasaki with the lead!

Villopoto is already stretching out his lead. Mike Alessi is second … behind him is Jame Stewart. Chad Reed has a poor start. On lap two he is in tenth place.

Villopoto is riding strong, fast, and aggressive. He’s leading. James Stewart has moved into second place. Then it’s M Alessi, Matt Goerke, and Kyle Chisholm. Reedy is ninth …

The top four are very stretched out.

Attendance is announced 46,896. Nice crowd!

The winner, easily, Ryan Villopoto. Then Stewart, Alessi, Goerke, Chisholm, …. and Reedy comes all the way up to sixth!

15 lap 250 SX West Main Event – 9:26pm. Joey Savatgy on the 176 KTM in the lead! At the end of the first lap, it’s Cole Seely with the lead, and Ken Roczen giving chase!

On the second lap, while running eighth – Eli Tomac goes down!

As we start lap three – Seely has a nice lead over Roczen, Jason Anderson is third. Joey Savatgy is next, followed by Martin Davalos and Christian Craig. Eli Tomac is 18th.

The top five after five laps are very spread out. Seely, Roczen, Anderson, Davalos, Savatgy. And then Tomac crashes again! He’s on the side of the track – and he’s not getting up quickly. He is heading back to the pits ….

Lap 12. Roczen has closed up right on Seely for the lead. And in a tight right hand corner, makes the pass for the lead! With Tomac out, and Roczen headed for the win, Roczen will definitely take over the points lead.

Kenny Roczen has won! And taken over the 250 West points lead! Cole Seely second, Jason Anderson third. (Full results below.)

Ken Roczen says “I’m super happy. I didn’t have the best start, and there was a lot of bar banging at the start. The crew worked great, I’m fit, and charged hard. I’m super happy!”

The 450 SX 20 Lap Main Event – 9:57pm. Big pile up in the second corner – at least five riders. One rider involved is Chad Reed. He’s first to get going. Josh Grant is another rider – he’s next to get going. James Stewart is another rider involved in the crash. He’s up and running – but very slowly.

Ryan Villopoto is out front. Justin Brayton is running second. Davi Millsaps is third. Mike Alessi fourth. Vince Friese is next. Ryan Dungey is in ninth. Trey Canard is 14th. Chad Reed 17th. Josh Grant 18th. James Stewart 19th – but has pulled out of the race. Justin Barcia is 20th – but also out of the race.

That crash in Oakland
Image

The crash – you can see Dungey was affected, Brayton’s bike, Josh Grant’s bike, Chad Reed (black helmet with Monster logos), James Stewart, Trey Canard, and other carnage …

Ryan Villopoto is already running away with this race on lap five. Davi Millsaps has moved into second – he’s eight seconds behind Villopoto. Third place is Justin Brayton, fourth is Mike Alessi.

Dungey seventh. Canard 10th. Reed 16th. Grant 18th. Again – Stewart and Barcia are out of this race.

On lap 16 Villopoto is out front by over 10 seconds over Millsaps, Ryan Dungey has moved to third. Then it’s Alessi fourth, Canard up to fifth. Canard makes the move on Alessi to move into fourth … Chad Reed is 12th.

Ryan Villopoto has won this race – convincingly! Davi Millsaps takes a nice second – and maintains his series points lead as the series heads back to Anaheim next Saturday. Ryan Dungey finishes third. (Full results below.)

Villopoto said “The points race is what we are going after, and winning the holeshot gives you a great advantage. We made some changes to the bike today that I think really helped us out there tonight, so hats off to my team. It is a long season, and we are going to keep plugging away.”

The new air shock did not appear to be the hot ticket this past weekend, especially in the heat race. Dungey himself however had an amazing night, snagging the last qualifying position from the LCQ and then going on to win the main event. Awesome night for KTM.

I'm willing to bet that a few conventional shocks have had problems on other nights. My bet is the problem with the air shock was something as simple as a leaking schraeder valve core.

First time KTM has won both 250 and 450 sx mains.

That was my guess as well, leaking schraeder valve. Air shocks don't blow seals sitting on the starting line.

Sorry for the interruption. I've only watched supercross like three times, but noticed something I'd like to try to capitalize on. There is a live twitter feed during the show and I'd like to get them to retweet our land use position paper. Can somebody tell me what their live tweet address is? Is it Monster Energy Supercross? If you have a twitter account you can also retweet some of the stuff I've been posting today. Thanks!
