I was laughing extra hard because on the drive out, I gave Brad my only words of advice for his first XC:
"Whatever you do, don't follow the guy in front of you, and don't get lost!"

no bad luck, just racing. Some times things don't work out. 
The irony of the day for me was when Scott was throwing in the towel before we even got off the line talking about how he will get lost, go off course, etc and i said to him, "Scott, you are going to do great today"

I am laughing my butt off right now. "We gotto go back down?" "Maybe!"
It's like you said, for what apparent reason we just kept on racing even though something wasn't right.

Lot's of trails out there. It is so easy to follow when in the heat of the moment. I've done that tons.
