You're on the right track. Better to get her started with a positive experience, not one where a too big or heavy bike causes her to fall, get frustrated, etc. PW50 is hard to beat, I think it's a better bike than the Suzuki JR50. There are a few here and there, mostly just anywhere a singletrack goes straight up a hill that's visible from one of the main roads. It's not going to ruin your day to obey them.

If the water was muddy, tear it down, many of the bearings inside are toast. Likely needs a rod too. Been there, done this before. If it sucked clean water from a creek, a series of flushes will clean it out.

I should add that my Berg 350 is getting on 180 hrs and has been a stellar bike to date. There are guys on KTM talk with 400+ hrs on these things, they are generally very reliable.
